Tucked between the Aiguilles Rouges and Mont Blanc mountains, Chamonix shares with Saint-Gervais-les-Bains the record for the municipality with the highest altitude in France. It owes this distinction, shared with the Aosta Valley, to the presence on its territory of the highest peak in the Alps: Mont Blanc which peaks at 4,810 metres. The town is popular with mountaineering enthusiasts and mountain sports in general. Mont Blanc is the third most visited natural site in the world, this tourist attraction gives a cosmopolitan face to the city.
